Vegan Leather and Cork
So what is Vegan Leather? This is usually made of materials like Polyurethane (PU), and Cork that can be used to create bags and jackets that previously were created from animal leather. Vegan Leather products can also be made from sustainable materials like pineapple skin, apple peels, and other fruit waste.
So let us dive deeper into Cork, the new wonder material that is being used as vegan leather. Cork is made from the bark of the cork oak tree. It is highly durable and stands out because of its fantastic texture!
It is scratch-resistant, stain-resistant, and is weather-resistant- that is better than any animal leather!
It requires patience to harvest cork oak. It usually takes 25 years for the first harvest. The first harvest is not usable, and then after nine more years, the second harvest is finally deemed usable for fashion. The harvesting of the bark does not harm the trees as the process extends the life of the cork oak tree by 300 years or so. Most of the cork oak trees are found in Portugal, and the Mediterranean weather is perfect for this tree.
