What is the difference between Vegan and Cruelty free beauty products?
Of late, there has been a movement towards vegan and cruelty-free beauty and wellness products. Rightly so, in our opinion! But many customers do not understand the difference between these terms. Many companies use these terms interchangeably, and that just adds to the confusion!
Here is our attempt to demystify these terms:
Quick answer: Vegan means that these beauty products do not contain animal products. "Cruelty-free" means that these beauty products have not been tested on animals.
Can beauty products be vegan and cruelty-free? Yes, it is possible if there are no animal ingredients used in them. These beauty products have not been tested on animals.
Can beauty products be only vegan and not cruelty-free? This is a bit counter-intuitive, but strictly speaking, this is also possible. So watch out! These beauty products do not contain animal ingredients but have been tested on animals. So it is possible.
Can products be only cruelty-free and not vegan? Sure thing! These are the beauty products that have not been tested on animals but contain animal products.
So with all these labels and terms, who can, we trust to maintain the standards and certifications? Here are a few well known certifying organizations:
Vegan.org: This is for certifying that the products are vegan
Peta.org: This organization certifies products that are both vegan and cruelty-free
Sadly, there are no government standards on these labels, so it is up to us to stay informed and make the right choice!
